What should the 2013 Blog Action Day theme be?

What should the 2013 Blog Action Day theme be?

Each year, the Blog Action Day team ask our community (Blog Action Day supporters, participants and partners) for their suggestions and ideas for what the theme should be for the upcoming Blog Action Day event.

Our special Facebook poll for the 2013 Blog Action Day event closes on April 30 so make sure you add your voice, and vote for your favourite idea  - you can even suggest your own if it doesn’t appear.

When the poll finishes the team running Blog Action Day, spend a few days deciding what the best theme would be based on your suggestions and poll results.

We will be announcing the official Blog Action Day theme on May 2, come back to our website or visit our social media channels to find out what it is.

Oxfam research shows that some big land deals are forcing hard working families from their homes, jobs and food. Stop the injustice – take action now.

Big land deals are tearing whole communities apart, leaving people hungry and homeless. It’s big business at a big cost. But the World Bank has the power to be a force for good. With your help, it can protect the rights of the world’s poorest people.

  • Factors like rising food prices and a demand for new fuels have caused a huge rush of big land deals
  • Every second, poor countries lose an area of land nine times the size of a football pitch to banks and private investors
  • Poor families are losing the land they rely on to grow food – often evicted without fair treatment or compensation

The World Bank funds many big land deals. It also influences how land is bought and sold. So this means it has the power to help get the situation back under control. We need your help to call on the Bank to play an important role in stopping land injustice.

Oxfam makes the following recommendations

World Bank’s freeze will send a strong signal to global investors to stop land-grabbing and to improve standards for:

  • Transparency – ensuring that information about land deals is publicly accessible for both affected communities and governments.
  • Consultation and consent – ensuring communities are informed in advance, and can agree or refuse projects.
  • Land rights and governance – strengthening poor people’s rights to land and natural resources, especially women, through better land tenure governance as set out by the Committee for Food Security.
  • Food security – ensuring that land investments do not undermine local and national food security.
